Progress

blue truckDue to the location of San Luis and Yuma County to the western edge of the CANAMEX corridor and the current Port of Entries required improvements. The local community decided that the construction of a new high technology commercial port would be the solution through GYPA. Since, they have attained federal legislation to purchase 400 acres of Bureau of Reclamation land along the border, (December 2000).

Exchange of Diplomatic Notes

arizona, mexican flagsThe Exchange of Diplomatic Notes between the United States and Mexico took place on September 4, 2001. The land was purchased August 30, 2002, for $517,860.55 including the initial environmental mitigation. These expenditures are significant to our communities, especially in light of the downturn in the economy and the effects it has had on revenues for State and Local governments. The City of Yuma became a Member Entity of GYPA in May 2003 and appointed two Board of Directors as their representatives. We have formed committees to work issues that need resolution or extra attention.

Legislative Committee - Chairman John Hudson

The Legislative Committee is made up of community members who seek to educate our elected officials on the importance of the new commercial port and the rehabilitation of our present port of entry into a crossing for pedestrians and non commercial vehicles only.

International Committee – Chairman Mario Jauregui

The International Committee will work with Mexico to seek joint opportunities that will improve business along our border.

Development Committee – Chairman Gary Magrino

Identify potential businesses which may be placed within the Port Authorities property boundaries which will enhance trade flow across the Border.

Financial Committee – Chairman Terre Catanzaro

The finance Committee will develop the GYPA Budget, initiate cash requirements to the Member Entities. They will identify funding sources to pay for the daily operation of GYPA and its infrastructure expansion. The committee will also develop recommended buy-in procedures for proposed new Member Entities.

Facilities Committee - Chairman Gary Burroughs

The Facilities Committee will design the port infrastructure and plan for future growth.
